Weber Genesis 1000 Review

by Brent
(Southern CT USA)

I have only owned one Weber grill. It's a Genesis 1000 that I bought over 10+ years ago. It's also the only grill I've ever owned that lasted over 3 years! Now since it's been so long since I've bought any other grill, that's not to say there aren't other brands and models that are just as good. But for me, the Weber Genesis has been superb.

In the ten plus years I’ve owned it, the only thing that’s been replaced has been the propane tank. I think it’s a common problem but the tank rusted a bit. It was exchanged for a new one so there wasn’t any cost involved (propane exchange). The rest of the grill is 100% original and I can truthfully say that I've never replaced any parts. I’ll also say that I’m not a fanatic about covering the grill. I’ve bought several grill covers but it has spent large amounts of time completely uncovered during summer and winter. In fact, I grill as much during the winter as I do during the summer. Even the simple push igniter still works! I’ve never had a those work after the first year on other grills.

One of the reasons that my Weber has held up so well is it’s construction. The cover, for instance, is a bright orange that looks like it’s painted. In reality, it’s a porcelain finish over metal that has never faded, chipped or scratched. Most of the other metal parts are a heavy duty enamel which has only faded in some small areas. It also uses aluminum in places that reduce corrosion.

A monthly cleaning with soap and water keeps my Weber looking new. The only real maintenance I do is to give all of the wood a new coat of paint. I also “season” the grates every few months by coating the grates with vegetable oil after scraping and washing them. Any light surface rust can be sanded off before hand. What’s nice about the Weber is that the grates are heavy duty and really stand up to use. I’ve had other inferior grills rust away quickly.

Though at the time I bought the Weber Genesis it was expensive (compared to other brands), it’s been the most cost effective grill I’ve owned. It’s more than paid for itself.
