Weber 87886 Chimney Starter

Charcoal Grill Starter Review

The Weber 87886 chimney starter will help you get perfect coals for your grill in a matter of minutes.

Simply set the aluminized steel chimney in your grill. Load your coals inside, light a fire and place the starter over the fire.

This large chimney starter will hold enough briquettes to fill a 22-1/2 inch kettle grill.

What We Like

The Weber 87886 chimney starter is larger than most others on the market. Like with all things that Weber makes this starter is durable and lasts for many seasons.

Your charcoal will heat quickly and easily without the need for lighter fluid, which elimantes the worry about the flavor of chemicals in your food any longer. It works equally well with wood chunks as it does with charcoal.

With a little modification, it also makes a terrific heat source for woks. You can finally stir fry over a high heat! The coals burn evenly and you get a grill full of coals that burn a long time.

It is easy to use… simply crumple up a little newspaper in the bottom, add your coals and set the paper on fire. Within 20 to 25 minutes, your coals will be red hot and ready to pour into the firebox of your grill. Extra air holes around the bottom make sure your coals are lit successfully every time.

What We Don't Like

Some people have had the experience of the handle on the Weber 87886 chimney starter getting too hot to touch without protection. Since the handle is advertised as staying cool, this can be detrimental to the product. If you don't mind using an oven mitt, this may not be important, unless the heat manages to melt the handle. A wooden handle may work better.

The height of the chimney may make it difficult to maneuver when dumping the coals into the grill for some people. Sometimes at this point, red hot ashes can fly about as well. If you live in a dry region, this might be a concern. If you wait too long before dumping, the coals on the bottom could be almost gone. The inside grate could be a bit finer to prevent small lumps of charcoal from falling through.

Summary
