Weber 22.5" Gold One Touch (Color Black) Review

by Tera Gram

There is a reason grilling is so very popular in America. That reason is Weber. They have consistently made a phenomenal product and have made various little additions over the years which have made their products even better.

It was with some shock and sadness that my husband threw away his trusty 18" Weber grill shortly after Thanksgiving this year. He used it at least three times a week for the last fifteen years. In that time, it had been knocked over by kids (thankfully never when lit!), a large dog (once when it was lit, and thankfully no one was hurt) and drunken neighbors (sadly, they too escaped injury). In all those bumps and bruises the grill always went right back together again, but I think we managed to damage the enamel at some point. The Saturday after Thanksgiving of 2008 was the last day for that grill. The legs fell off and it was clearly unrepairable. My poor husband wept mightily.

Me? I whipped out my MasterCard and bought him a new one the very next day. No grill meant I would have to cook all the meals. I love to cook but I also love it when my husband grills dinner for us. There was no way I was going one minute longer than necessary without a Weber on the porch.

I have loved Weber since I grew up in the NW suburbs of Chicago, where Weber is made. So, when I had to replace the grill I decided to treat my husband and get him the top of the line 22.5" Gold One Touch (charcoal only, thank you!).

The packaging for the product was absolutely perfect. All of it was easily recyclable. There was no extraneous waste, excessive tie-downs, or other detritus to get in the way. The assembly instructions were clear and simple. From the time I took the boxed grill out of the car to ready-to-use was perhaps 10 minutes, and that includes getting a cold beer from the fridge.

The updated ash tray on the Gold One-Touch is a phenomenal addition to a superb product. Our last model had the simple aluminum flying saucer pan. I am also quite enamored of the new handles. They appear to be sturdy enough to last a life time. Our last model had wood and after just a few years they looked very nasty, although they remained serviceable up until the very end.

Another great addition to the Gold One Touch is the flippy bits on the top grill surface. Now we can add new charcoal easily, although... in truth, it'll be used more for retrieving food that I've accidentally pushed into the fire. :)

The Weber One-Touch: A fabulous American product suitable for any home.
