Char-Broil Four-Burner Grill With Outdoor Stove & Griddle (463420708)

by R. Paul
(Chicago, Illinois)

My wife got me this Char-Broil grill for Father's day, based on the recommendation from the salesperson at Lowes'. I've not been very happy with it, for a number of reasons.

First, the in-lid thermometer rusted after just a few rains. The "chrome" ring around the thermometer has a bunch of visible rust spots, and the chrome is flaking off. In addition, there is moisture inside the glass of the thermometer, so I'm not sure if that affects the temperature.

Secondly, any pans I've used on the side burner, or over the main burners get a black powdery soot on them that's hard to clean. I would expect that with the main burners on the grill part, but not the side burner. I'm using "Blue Rino" gas tanks, so it's not like it's some off brand propane.

The metal flame diffusing "vents" that go over each burner are also rusted through, and they have never had any water on them! Only the grease drippings from food cooking and dripping through the grill surface onto the diffusers - it's also weird. I've never had that happen before. And they're flaking off in layers, not around a rust hole like you'd imagine.

Finally, the grease capture tray is designed in such a way that you have to tip it back to clear the "stops" to fully remove it. The problem is, of course, that tipping it back causes it to spill grease everywhere!

On a positive note: The rest of the grill is awesome. It cooks great - anything from burgers and hotdogs to whole turkeys. The temperature is consistent, which is important for 3-hour turkey sessions! It has held up to rain and snow, plus the occasional rock thrown by the lawnmower. The metal grates are easy to clean with a brass brush, and it heats up to optimal temperature quickly.

The only accessory I've added is the in-handle lights, so when the lid is open there's light shining on the food inside. That's very useful for late-night or winter use when night falls before dinnertime.

Problem with Soot on Side Burner
by: Don

Hi,
Was wondering what to do about the problem with soot on bottom of frying pans from the sideburner? Have same problem and it is a real issue, because the soot is all over the bottom of the frying pan and clean up can only be done outside and the soot gets all over your hands when cleaning which stays on your hands for most of the day. Could you let me know how to fix this problem?
